John Coyne has designed for a wide variety of productions. His scenic designs for opera, theatre, musicals and immersive experiences have been seen across the country in many different performance spaces. John enjoys working collaboratively and explores diverse styles ranging from very specific period pieces to more installation style abstract sets.

In addition to designing sets, John is the Director of Scenic Design at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He also taught scenic design and theater craft at the Yale School of Drama and SUNY Purchase and architectural design at Illinois Institute of Technology and Cornell University.

Prior to his career as a theatre designer, John worked as licensed architect in Chicago Illinois on various buildings ranging from university and corporate projects to private homes and interiors. Most recently, John was a Principal at Theatre Projects Consultants where he combined his knowledge of theatre and architecture. His projects included The Tempe Center for the Arts with Barton Myers Associates, Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington, D.C. with McInturff Architects, The Wyly Theatre in Dallas with the architecture firms OMA and REX, The New World Symphony in Miami with Frank Gehry and the new home for The Greek National Opera with Renzo Piano.

John pursued his studies at the Yale School of Drama, the School of Architecture at Cornell University and the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, including the Rome Studies Program. Fellowships and awards received include the Donald M. Oenslager Scholarship (Yale), John Dinkeloo Prize (American Academy in Rome), Peggy Guggenheim Fellowship (Venice) and the Arthur M. Gensler Scholarship (Cornell) as well as the Connecticut Critics Award (You Never Can Tell), the Elliot Norton Award Nomination (The Taming of the Shrew), the Dallas-Fort Worth Theater Critics Forum's Award (The Front Page), the Dean Goodman Choice Award (12th Night), and the Leon Rabin Award Nomination (Tartuffe).
